WY’EAST FIRE DISTRICT BURNING REGULATIONS

BURNING IS CURRENTLY PROHIBITED THROUGHOUT HOOD RIVER COUNTY

BURNING (as defined below) IS CURRENTLY ALLOWED FROM 7:00 A.M. TO 5:00 P.M. DAILY WITH A CURRENT BURN PERMIT.

Burn Permits: CURRENT BURN PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL BURNING. Burn Permits may be obtained from the Wy’East Fire District or Crystal Springs Water District. Call (541) 354-1648 before burning.

Do You Reside Within Oregon Department of Forestry Protected Lands? If so, yearly burn permits are REQUIRED. You must also call ODF at (541) 296-4626 if you are going to be burning any large brush/slash piles.

Do you Reside Within a Homeowners’ Association? Covenants of a Homeowners’ Association may prohibit use of burn barrels or any open burning.

Burn Barrels: Allowed daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Burning after dark is prohibited. Current burn permits are required. Call (541) 354-1648 before burning. Barrels need to have a 1/4″ mesh screen and have a clear area that is 10-feet in diameter, and 25-feet from any building or combustibles. Do NOT leave fires unattended.

Burn Piles (open burning): Current burn permits are required. Call (541) 354-1648 before burning. Burning is allowed daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Burning at night or when dark is strictly prohibited. Piles should have a clear area that is 50 to 100 feet in diameter. Burn piles may burn for more than just one day; however, at the end of each day do NOT add additional materials to the fire and do NOT push the piles up. Do NOT leave fires unattended. NOTE: If you are within ODF-protected lands, you need to contact the Oregon Department of Forestry at (541) 296-4626 before burning any large brush/slash piles.

Water Requirements: When burning, water IS REQUIRED to be at the site. Open fires shall have a garden hose that is on and ready to go. If no water is available, water will need to be brought to the burn site (tank and pump with a minimum of 100 gallons.)

Distance Restrictions: No open fire shall be kindled within 50-feet of any property line, public right-of-way, building, fence, or combustible growth. Adequate provisions shall be made to prevent fires from spreading.

Size Restrictions: Fires larger than 15-feet by 15-feet need to be inspected by an officer of the Wy’East Fire District before burning.

Burn Restrictions: Burning of uncut grass, brush or vegetation is prohibited. You may obtain a special permit from an officer of the District to burn.

Unattended Fires: Open fires shall be attended at all times. Unattended fires will be put out by the Fire Department.

Banned Materials: The burning of objectionable materials such as household garbage, rubber, roofing, plastic or any other material that may cause harm to life or property is prohibited.

Windy Conditions: Burning during windy conditions is not recommended.

Smoke Pollution: Be aware of smoke conditions that may impose undue problems to neighbors. Do not allow fire to smolder. Turn ashes occasionally. Complaints may cause termination of permit.
